It's 2019 ... and there are signs everywhere that vegan living is infiltrating the mainstream. The expansion of the vegan philosophy and way of life is unstoppable. There are public vegan-themed signs and billboards, vegan shops all over the world, vegans from all walks of life, and some proving we can accomplish great feats like climbing the highest mountains, and breaking world-records in running marathons. There's animal liberation protests and marches spanning both hemispheres. Vegan education booths on the street, and vegan fairs and festivals are taking place globally. Vegans, or the word vegan, is on TV everyday in the U.S.A. Plant-based meat, cheese, and ice cream are taking off and more and more non-vegan food companies are adding a line of vegan products. All this and more is conveyed within this photo collection: The Rise of Veganism.

“It is rare that a single choice of ours can have a broad and decisive impact on the climate crisis. We have a moral imperative to choose and advocate for plant-based diets for the health of our planet and the well-being and survival of generations to come.”

"Adopting a plant-based diet is one of the most powerful choices an individual can make in mitigating environmental degradation and depletion of Earth's natural resources." ~ National Academy of Sciences
“If cattle and dairy cows were a country, they would have more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire EU 28.” ~ Steven Chu, President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, former Energy Secretary, Nobel Prize winning physicist
"The only way to have a truly sustainable diet is to eat more plant-based foods and less meat and dairy. All this new research shows that we don’t have a choice — there simply isn’t the land to feed the U.S. or the world any other way." Center for Biological Diversity
“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use... It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car." Joseph Poore, University of Oxford, Department of Zoology and the School of Geography and Environment
"A 1% reduction in world-wide meat intake has the same benefit as a three trillion-dollar investment in solar energy." ~ Chris Mentzel, CEO of Clean Energy
"As environmental science has advanced, it has become apparent that the human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future: deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, the destabilization of communities, and the spread of disease." Worldwatch Institute, "Is Meat Sustainable?"
“If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetables and grains... the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.” Environmental Defense Fund
"However they are achieved, plant-based diets are a compelling win-win for society... Few climate solutions of this magnitude lie in the hands of individuals or are as close as the dinner plate." ~ Paul Hawken, environmentalist, entrepreneur, author and activist
Not sure how to do this, or if I'm doing this right. My name is Brook Katz and this is my sister's blog. It is because of her that I am vegan for 32 years now. We approach the subject from two different sides. I am the science side who sees the logic and reasoning of it all, and she is the compassionate and ethical side. What is amazing is how much we have been able to open up to each other's points of view. It just seems that in the case of veganism, there really isn't a side. I compare veganism to a bicycle tire. There are no sides because it is round. (Like this planet) Veganism is the hub of the tire with many different ways of reaching it, and from any direction. There is no right or wrong way to get to the hub, and once there, your are then connected to every other tire spoke. Veganism connects us all in ways we never would have thought.
ReplyDeleteMy sister's blog really expressed this. I travel a lot, and I see it in almost every place I go now. 32 years ago no one even knew the word, much less have an establishment. Heck, in those days just finding a "health food store" meant driving to another city or town. Now it's becoming common place as her blog shows. People ask, "What can I do? I'm just one person!" Well it seems there are a lot of "One persons" and collectively we can make a difference and maybe still save this beautiful world in which we ALL live.
I'm headed to the Dominican Republic in a few days and we'll see what the consciousness is there. Hopefully the mangoes will be ready mmmmmmmm.
Thanks sis for encouraging people
I don't actually see it like my brother (as per his comment above). One can be led to a plant diet via personal or planetary health...but that's not veganism. Veganism is a way of life, it extends beyond diet, and it seeks to exclude as far as possible, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals; for food, clothing, toiletries, entertainment, or for any reason.
ReplyDeletePhenomenal array of compelling photos, Butterflies. Seeing is believing. Thank you SO MUCH for your devotion to veganism, which is, as you point out, a way of life that extends beyond one's diet.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to add to the conversation my "extended application" of the universally known and respected moral and ethical precept that Christians, in particular, call "The Golden Rule."
There are over 2 billion Christians, and over 5 billion religious and spiritual people; the great majority of people on Earth -- more than enough to "move the needle" towards the vegan lifestyle. Such a move is clearly justified by the expansion of "The Golden Rule" to include ALL sentient beings, both humans and non-humans alike. As is noted in one of the photos you posted, we are ALL animals (humans are members of Kingdom Animalia).
Here's my version of "The GR": Do for others, either directly or indirectly, what you would want done for you." And, "Don't do to others, either directly or indirectly, what you wouldn't want done to you."
This version is simple and it essentially covers all the bases. The word "others" means all others -- all sentient beings. The word indirectly can be used, for example, to point out that if a person isn't willing to kill an animal him/herself, then he/she shouldn't feel comfortable in going to "the meat case" in the grocery store, to buy the dead animal flesh that someone(s) else put there for purchase.
Here's to all of us moving towards living what we might call "the higher and better expansion" of our ever-present "Golden Rule" -- the one we've always known -- the one we profess to both believe in and live by.
