The hardest part about being vegan for me is not because I gave up animal products. It is the pain of watching others still consuming, wearing, etc. animals. It's deeply painful to know what they go through and see others contribute to keeping the suffering alive.
6/27/2013 1:57 PM View respondent's answers
I'm not sure if I became veg for the animals, but I'm definitely staying for them. The hard part of being vegan is knowing how much suffering could be avoided if more people were vegan. One of my friends was only vegan for a few months because he found out there was animal products used in common things such as sugar, rice, and felt he was helpless (ridiculous from my point of view). Another friend took up a vegan diet on a dare for 3 weeks and gave up because he wanted milk in his cereal. He didn't know about plant milks. Now, he is an omnivore who only drinks almond milk so I haven't given up hope on him yet. Again, its true that if information was more readily available more people would be vegan.

Let's say that being pesca-ova-vegetarian is the lifetime commitment. I eat 95% vegan but I do have eggs about once a month and fish maybe once every 6 months. I am primarily a health-motivated vegan and that does not necessitate a 100% commitment. I also am a very "moderate" person and don't need the "identity baggage" that goes along with publicly proclaiming attitudes/preferences.

I have ponies (mostly rescued) and I use leather tack, but I only buy second hand, not new. It's a tricky one for me and that is the best compromise I can come up with. I also have 7 rescue dogs who are fed a kibble mix.

Yes a lifetime commitment unless you are unable to be healthy on a vegan diet. I am really giving it my all and trying to ensure I get good nutrition so I guess only time will tell. In many ways it is very easy being a vegan, except when it comes to social outings & parties & business meetings. Very few local restaurants offer vegetarian options let alone vegan options...very few even offer salads without meat let alone dairy. Any social outing at a non-vegan restaurant requires me to special order a salad without meat or dairy (pretty much the ONLY option for a gluten-free vegan). Many people have no awareness that others have dietary restrictions (either by choice or because of allergies), and so those planning parties or meals for business meetings don't take this into consideration. In these situations it is difficult to find something acceptable to eat.

I have celiacs...and I find avoiding gluten in foods much harder than avoiding animal products. :) Veganism is pretty easy for me, but then again I never craved meat or cheese. I seriously think some people *are* 'addicted' to meats, and people probably vary in how much protein they need in a day. I don't think there is one 'vegan diet' for everyone. For others, it may be a lot more work. I'm happy to live off smoothies and soups, but I was always the "eat to live" not "live to eat" person. XD
